$6-8k is way high for that year and that mileage. They are no more rust resistant than the previous generation. There is a rubberized sound deadening around the rear strut towers that hold moisture in, they rot from the inside out. If your subframe has rotted enough to need replacement, you need to look closely at the unibody. The control arms are a recall, but often the subframes are just as bad with no recall. Also check around the rear door latch, if you see rust on any of the bolts that hold the seat in place, it indicates a bit of hidden rust.
