I am becoming resolved to the fact that something is internally awry with my current transmission in my '91 318is.

I have been researching my options and the differences between Getrag gearboxes (IE: 220, 240, 250, 260) online and it is confusing. I believe I need a late model 240 for my car to avoid having to retrofit a bunch of other parts to make a 220, 250 or 260 work. But I'm not 100% sure of this...advice is appreciated. I have read that the early 80's M10 320i/318i came with an earlier version of the 240 but it is slightly different, the 2002 guys use this as a 5-speed swap (it uses a difference speedo drive mechanism from my 240 and I'd use my bell-housing I believe...not sure if this is an option for me or not)

I'm also not sure which car manufacturers spec'd the 240 in their cars. I know that it was the gearbox in 1991 318i sedans and 1991 318is coupes.

If anyone has a line on a working, fairly low-mileage example it would be much appreciated.
