Cool, buuut....are these things actually any good to drive? Or as miserably slow as I'm imagining?
I would've thought the petrol-engined MK1's would still be pretty economical, but way more fun, with the revvier engine.

I've owned about 140 cars and my '79 Rabbit Diesel would make the top 10. Build quality was exceptional.
We had it slightly tweaked (fairly open exhaust and advanced injection pump) and the power level was acceptable... it would cruise 90mph all day long. Handling (also tweaked slightly) was very good.
It did smoke like a chimney under full throttle though... more acceptable in the 80's than now. I think a much better combo would be a German-built MK1 like this with a later turbo diesel drivetrain.
Interestingly, my parents liked it so much they bought an American made '82 model new. Had I owned it, it would have easily made the bottom five cars... as bad as anything I'd driven. We ended up giving it an 8v GTI gas conversion later... and it was still a crappy car.
Buy that, drive it to san francisco and sell it for $5500. Unless its rusty it would be easy to get that much.

Same here. It wasn't quick by any means but not slow either. Once you got it rolling it would cruise at 70mph with speed to spare. Once had it topped out at 110 (downhill) verified by the Saab that was right in front of me.

Having owned both a 1980 Rabbit and a 1984 GTi (which was my first new car), I feel your pain. 20+ years on and that GTi is still easily five of the ten worst cars I ever owned. The other five would be the 1987 Jetta that replaced it. It took a divorce to get rid of that one. As they say, extreme situations call for extreme measures.

This. I would like a TDI-swapped Rabbit. A Caddy would be even better.

I've been wanting one for years. At one time I even knew of a Caddy that was sitting around with no engine, and found a wrecked '98 Jetta TDI (the MKIII TDI's wiring is much easier to deal with than the MKIV). Unfortunately at the time I had too many projects, not enough money, and not enough balls to pull the trigger.
As soon as I get the DeLorean done and gone, the Rabbit fixed, the Scirocco done, the Passat's heater core and power steering pump fixed, The 944 painted, the quarter hung on the E30, and the '66 Fastback finished, then I'll be on the lookout for a Caddy and a wrecked TDI something!
How much you looking for for the DeLorean?
That's actually the only one that doesn't belong to me. I'm fixing it for a friend. It will be for sale when it's done though! The price will depend on how much farther she wants me to go on it.
