$1400 for GRMer's (but this being where it is, I will also consider trades from you guys)

1984 Mercedes 300D Turbo Diesel. 431,000 miles. Yes, that is correct 431,000 miles.

Overall its a good car. Not a great one, but a good one.

4 door, auto. Power windows, AC, power steering, power brakes, windows, sunroof. 3 liter 5 cylinder diesel. As I understand it, the car belonged to a Will Rogers air traffic controller who lived in Choctaw and this was his daily driver. He retired, bought a motorhome to travel with. He took it to his mechanic and asked him to sell it. I needed something besides my van to get to work and I got it. It has done that exceptionaly well, even in the snow. In fact, in the snow, this thing is a tank. I never got stuck during either storm. If you have a long highway commute to work, this is the car for you. I get between 22-27 MPG depending on how much highway driving I do.

My automotive ADD has kicked in and her replacement has arrived. The boss has handed down the decision of "Not one more!" So, to make room, this has to go.

Most of the work was done by Silver Star motors in Edmond Oklahoma. The timing chain replaced 50,000 miles ago. The tires were replaced in Dec, Yokohoma Avids.

Now, as you may have guessed, a car this broken-in is not perfect. The body is straight, but there are 2 spots of rust.

This is under the passenger side rear door.

This is under the driver side rear bumper.

The paint was really oxidized when I got it, so I spent a lot of time with a buffer and rubbing compounds. It looks like a good 10 footer now, but in a few places, it has gotten a little thin. Of course it has chips and a few scratches. I still think it looks pretty good. The panels line up well and as far as I can tell, has never been wrecked.

The front seats are worn. The passenger is too bad, but the drivers looks like a 431K car. But get ya some cheap sheepskins and you're golden

The back seat looks almost perfect

The rest of the interior is pretty good. Some of the wood has given me issue, but I re-glued it.

The trunk is in good shape

and the obligatory engine bay shot.

It even has the original manuals

It doesn't look like its on fire, but yeah, it smokes a little. It's a diesel. My buddy rode his bike behind it and didn't die. No, you ain't gonna win any stoplight to stoplight races. The stereo kinda works. It likes to short out, get quiet and then be really loud every now and again. There is a spare radio in the trunk, the digital display didn't work, so I swapped them then the short thing started. The power antenna didn't work, so I replaced it with a manual one. The sunroof closes very slowly and sometimes needs a little push to finish. I think some bearing grease will fix it. It could use new shocks. But it is competent on the freeway. The cruise control works.

yes, this is very wordy. But I like to be upfront. The car is in Edmond OK.

    Thanks

    Nor for me.

Over 400K miles, though, that's damn impressive.

    Soldier on, old Mercedes.

Dangit, I'm looking for an older 300D right now but you are way too far away (I'm in MI).

If anyone wants one in the SouthEast, I've got a friend who drives one as a daily driver that might be for sale. Much lower miles, much better interior, comparable rust and mechanical condition. Maybe a little higher price tag.

Let me know if you want me to pursue it.

Paul, I'm interested in your SVX or that 300D. Maybe give your buddy my e-mail addy?

  • March 18, 2010 7:55 a.m. SVreX PowerDork

Hmmm... I didn't think about the fact that offering him a referral on the Mercedes might risk my opportunities on the SVX.

    I'll look into it.

There's one of these for sale near me, but for some reason, I'm WAAAAAY suspicious of the fact that it has doner only about 150K in nearly 25 years. Price is attractive, but I don't have a "fall-back" Mercedes/Diesel mechanic.
