Got in touch with the owner. He thinks it is a timing problem. Are these interference motors? Likely culprit?

Non-interference motor. Probably broke the timing belt. Some people just drive them until the belt breaks and put a new one on at the side of the road. Other likely culprit would be the igniter. Even if the motor is junk, that's still a deal. Add a 20v and hang on.
