I always had the idea of taking one of the turboed mercedes diesels and doing work on the boost. It would be cool to put more boost in it and blow black smoke out the tailpipe. This was my idea to get back at the smog man though.
A mercedes manual is very rare, they weren't an option in the US I think. The funny part about the 4speed at least in my car, is that it starts out in 2nd. So it is basically only uses the top 3 gears. Some say if you stomp the gas it will start out in first but hell if I know.
Good luck, at least you could always pull the engine and sell it to a diesel head.

I see 4 speed manual 240D cars all the time, but yes other than that mercedes manual trannys are rare.
