The Bandit in Indy on C/L. Not mine, etc.

    NOT a bandit car.

    Not a '77

    Not a Y-84 code car

And absolutely worthless with a Chevy motor in it.

For $2300 you should be able to buy a Y-84 (black and gold T/A SE) in equally rough shape with the correct engine.

    hey buzz killington

yeah its rough, no its not a real bandit car, no its not a 77. but neither was the car from the 2nd movie. and you can paint anything black with a good bird.

plus for a fun car i'd rather have a chevy 350 than an olds 403.

Umm, the car in the second movie was "Bandit" car.

The Y-84 package earned the "bandit" nickname thanks to the movie.

There was a black and gold Trans-Am S/E package from 1976 to 1981.

It started as the Y-82 package which basicly means a full-load car with the WS-6 package.

It changed to Y-84 later on.

So, any Y-82/Y-84 coded car from '76 to '81 is technically a Bandit.

Plus, if that was a factory 4-speed it would likely have a 400, not a 403.

Both of which had more balls than the 350 of the same year.

    There was a 301 4-speed available but they're rare.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, just educate people.

If you want to buy a T/A, you can get a lot more car for that kind of cash. Youshould be able to get a numbers matching car in that kind of condition for that price.

Plus, if you want a Chevy motor, just buy a Camaro, they made thousands of them.

Putting a Chevy motor in a Pontiac involves a lot more than just putting it in. Motor mounts, battery location, wiring harness, fan shroud etc are all different. If you don't buy the correct shaker scoop base you end up bolting the shaker to the hood like the craigslist guy did which makes it non-funtional and makes it sit too high.

By the looks of the car, there's a pair of load helpers or air shocks in the back which were probably installed to help clear the non-factory-style dual exhaust because the mufflers scrape when you cheap out and put them under the car instead of behind of the axle where they belong.

    In reply to Trans_Maro:

Damn, just bird-dogging cars for guys on here. Didn't realize that a reference to a '70s movie would wrinkle someone's panties so badly. We're not exactly purists when we bolt Cadillac 500s into BMW Isettas, now are we? Chill the eff out.

    Easy there tiger.

It's not an attack on you, calm down.

There's nothing wrong with posting the craigslist ad, I just wanted people to know what they're looking at.

What if someone were a purist who wanted a correct car?

    It pays you to know.

Sorry, it probably didn't come off correctly from my end either.

There's always a thread on here about "learn me on car" with people giving good, honest facts about it.

I was just trying to do the same, I can be frank sometimes and it doesn't always come out the right way.

These cars are worth a lot of cash when they're correct and worth nothing when they're not. My side business is second-gen Trans-Ams so it pays me to know these things.

There are a few purists out there!

    I have a 1980 Indy Pace Car (Y-85 Turbo Trans-Am) and it's a numbers-matching car.

I also have a ratted-out 1981 WS-6 Turbo T/A running 12lbs of boost, hotchkiss and speedway suspension parts with a lot of 9C1 Carpice bits and a 4-speed manual conversion as well. It's tons of fun but I cut up a plain-jane turbo T/A to do it, not a rare model.

I found the engine conversation interesting. Wasn't there a 440 offered? And even a turbo option somewhere?

  • 16vCorey

    March 15, 2010 12:10 p.m. 16vCorey SuperDork

There was a 301 turbo available. The only engines available above 400ci was the 400 and the 403. No 440.

  • Trans_Maro

    March 15, 2010 2:04 p.m. Trans_Maro HalfDork

No 301 Turbo until 1980 though.

You could get a 455 back in the day but not after midway through the 70's

But this ain't the "learn me on " forum... it's the $2010 forum... where guys posts links to interesting cars they find for sale... "facts" are secondary to a catchy thread title.

Looks nice enough. Since it's not a good example of the breed, it's a great canvas.
