I don't supose one of you folk in the Marylandish area have an old log splitter laying in the backyard unused that you'd want to part with cheaply...would you?

I've got enough wood to justify buying one, instead of playing the rental game.

I'm even considering buying an electric one. I know they aren't nearly as powerful, but they are cheaper and real easy to use with just an extension cord.

I have a manual, hydraulic one. Basically just a car jack and a metal wedge. It works for when my back has had enough of the maul. Harbor Freight brand.

My friend was looking for one, but he thought they were all overpriced, so he built this:

Building one would be fine, if I had the time. So many other projects layered on the back burners.

The more I think about it, the more I find myself liking the notion of an electric one. Specifically, the Speeco one sold by TSC. Plug it in, split some logs for a few minutes, unplug it. Even the wife could do that on a moment to moment basis. Hmmm.

Supliment it with the maul for the pieces that it can't do. Though I suspect my shoulders will no longer like that. Dang but this aging stuff has its downfalls.

Hey, the Dutch did it! You should be able to too.

my dad has the little ryobi electric hydraulic one. he got it reconditioned from some place online for sub $300 shipped. he has run so much wood through it, stuff way too big per the instructions, and it has not let up in 3 years with overloading and abuse.
