I'm looking for under $50 as there is a good chance I could brick it. It will be used on WIFI only, so network is not an issue, nor is a bad ESN.

Pretty sure he may have said fifty dollars. Keep in mind, with the older devices, RAM will be an issue when you run newer versions of software. My phone isn't old and is already falling behind.

Looking at rooting with some of the alternate rom loads. I like the idea of a tablet. But want the camera and smaller size (pocket)

I've got a Droid Eris for sale on c-list for $75.. Might not be what you're looking for but the battery still fully charges and the wifi works great.
