I have no affiliation with this. Just discovered it in my CL search.

$4950 for what seems to be a Spec Miata! http://chicago.craigslist.org/sox/cto/2590739912.html

    Holy cow!

Does Spec rules allow removal of the dash? It looks like they took it out.

No, spec doesnt allow dash removal.

Thought so, does this seem a little fishy to anyone? I'm talking (texting) to the guy, he says it was only raced once by the previous owner, he has used it for advertising not racing, he hasn't answered if he has logbooks for it.

It doesn't have logbooks. Is that a big problem?

Yes. Logbooks mean that someone went to all the trouble of getting the car past the tech inspection for a sanctioning body. They tell you where/when it was raced and if there were incidents.

No logbook == not race car yet. The difference can be a significant and staggering expense. It could be nothing... but at that price it is probably best to fall on the side of suspicious.

Also, still has power steering......which tells you thats no race car but more of a 'posing as race car'.

Ah well. I thought it was too good to be true.

I'm guessing that guy doesn't know enough about Spec Miata to tell you anything about that car. But if I were closer to Chicago, I'd jump all over that. I don't see anything wrong with that car for that price. It took about $7k to build my SM from the ground up. And my car had power steering until I removed it.

Chances are, the car was built, used for a few track days, and then sold. Most SM's don't run with a passenger seat. The other seat is usually in for the instructor to sit in on track days. And you don't need a dash for track days.

In reply to racerfink: What classes do allow for dash removal? What would it still be legal for?

I had an instructor at NHMS last year who drove a "spec miata". He said he never intended to do anything other than HPDEs in it, but he built the cage to SM rules and used the SM suspension setup so he'd have a car he could sell after he built it. I don't think he had a dash in his either (probably easier for passengers to get in and out without it), and I'm sure it didn't have a logbook. I am guessing this car is along the same lines.

You could run it in FProd and GTLite, but you wouldn't be very competitive with the stock motor

Also, it's nothing to put another dash in there. The one in my car is removable.
