While driving today on outer Cape Cod I spied a fairly decent looking 87 Scirocco (Karmann I think) 16V for sale on the side of the road. I wrote down the phone number,and could get more details if you want. It is a 5 speed if that matters,and has a sunroof. There is no price listed,and I forgot to get the miles. There was some rust bubbles around the passengers side door handle,but the rest of the car looked pretty good for a car its age in MA.
Details, please.
Okay guys,
So I am back down the Cape where I saw this car for sale last fall. It is still there in the same spot. I will try to get some pics later on my way back home,and some more details. It looks good on the surface for a car its age in MA. The cape,and islands have some odd cars that you don't see anywhere else in MA,and it may be due to the people that live down here drive less,and the cape usually gets a lot less snow during the winter,so less need for salt on the roads. I will inspect as best I can on my way home.

The rust around the door handles will require a cut & patch. That is you cut out the bad metal and weld in some good stuff. Only way to fix this so you have the strength this area needs. I did this on 3 of the 4 doors I have for my Rocco race car. It's an easy job if you have a welder, but can be expensive if you have to pay a body shop to do it.
This is a common problem with these cars. There is a piece of metal spot welded to the outer sheet metal in that area, to add some support to the door handle. VW did not do a good job of painting behind or between the two pieces of metal. Water gets trapped in there and you have rust. Go figure.
I have a 1988 Rocco that sat for most of the past 8 years, part of that time outside. The only rust it had was these doors and the drivers floor due to the sunroof leaking. VW did a good job of rust proofing these car for the most part. This was a Chicago car so being rust free is rare in this area.
If its there 8 months later, I'm gonna go with a shot engine, or a high asking price.....
Or clueless people in MA that don't drive cars that are much older than 5 years or so.
