    Is a Mopar 383 a big block?

    A GM 383 is a small block- 350 with a 400 crank.

    Didn't K-cars start in 1981?

    That's not a K car.

    The Aspen is an A-body.

A 440 is sure to improve it!

It would still run hard as a 383 due to the relatively large bore and those lovely fat lifters. Good article recently in Hot Rod recently on that very subject. A cheapo build-up resulting in 500+ easy horses.

I hate to be a potty mouth or a donkey... but

There a lot of things wrong and a lot of things right with the prior posts...

383's are great! almost square in two ways!

Its not a K car, however, a K car with a mid mounted 383 would make me leave the house for milk when the milk only smells "funny."

But that is no A body... Aspens, Volere, Mirada, Cordoba, etc are known as F/M/J bodies.

now this is an A body!

I thought that was a Kei car?!?

Hm. I have a sky blue Volare with what i presume to be a seized 318 ( hasn't run in at least 15 years) in a barn... that I inherited from my dad when he passed. Always wondered what to do with that car.

Cruise the GRM back issues and look for the Ford Fairmont wrote up. Same thing only Mopar!

Learning things is good. Thanks for the clarification; I thought the Volare/Aspen were more like the Dart/Valiant.

The F-body Volare/Aspen twins were the last all-new Mopar RWD unibody until the LX cars (Viper excluded). They were designed to be an upsized compact replacement for the A-bodies. Similar in concept to the Granada over the Maverick.

The F-body design was modified to create the M-body Diplomat/Gran Fury/5th Avenue and the J-body Mirada/'80-up Cordoba/'81-83 Imperial.

The Mopar 383 is a big block. The one in that car is probably the most common B-block style. There were something like 3 million B-block 383's made. Prior to the B-block 383 there was a RB-383. The R stands for Raised Block. That's the taller deck version of the B-block the 440 is based off of. But the RB-383's were only made for two years and less than 30,000 were made.

And to confuse the Chevy guys even more, Mopar had a big block 350 at one point too.

The Volare/Aspens were not available with a factory installed big block but they fit very well. Either modifying the mounts on the K-member or use any of the now commonly available aftermarket swap mounts.

    Quick edit:

    This is a 383 K-Car:

350BBM? I only knew for the 343(?) and the poly "big block" 318.

Altho 383 blocks make awesome 451 strokers.....

Yep, a 350B was made in the late 50's. It might have been '58 only, or maybe '58-59. It's a really small bore 383. The 361 came out a year after the 350. It was an bored 350.

And 400 blocks make really nice 496 strokers too.
