Really anything that runs good, passes inspection and doesn't have rust issues. I'm in central VA.

Check the Craig's List! I see stuff on there that won't be economical but will get you home. I'd post links but work may not approve of CL cruising on the time clock.
Another way to see those sub $1k deals is to perform the search and then use RSS to subscribe to it. That way when the deals show up they'll be sent right to your browser. You just click on the link created and the results of the search are right there.

I'm surprised too. I usually find the best deals on the Hampton Rd's CL or the Washington DC CL.

That wagon is about a two and a half hour drive, but man that one looks good for the money. Awesome idea on the RSS too!! never thought of that. I may have found a 1988 grand am with the "iron duke" engine for $400. I'm checking it out today. If it doesn't need much, I may try getting one of those HHO generators for it with the left over money.

Agreed.
GA vs Civic wagon, I'd go with the wagon. Even though it is a carb car with a million vacuum lines, it is cheap and easy to work on. The General...well, it's the General.

My 86 Toyota pickup is still languishing in southern Maryland because I haven't done anything with it.

True. it is a GM. it's a one owner car, and he has all service records. I was looking through the service records, and he has needed more than the average share of work done. One bad thing is that he only changed oil once a year when he got his state inspection. 140000 miles divided by 21 years = 6,666 miles between changes. Hmmm wonder if that number is a bad sign
I'm in Lynchburg BTW.
