Cheap is good. Clean is better.

Manual and the 3.0 V6 are mandatory. (Which i guess means i need an 86-91)

In no real rush... just curious if anyone has one laying around, because... you know.

PS: If you happen to have one of the mythical manual 2.2 i4 models that are debated if they ever came to North America or not... WE NEED TO TALK.

The 929 only ever had the 3 liter V6 (I think you are thinking it's "successor", the Millenium, which had a 2.5?) and the manual was gone by 1989...except on "home-built" cars. Home-built being GRM-type projects or JDM cars.

Therefore, 929 with a manual in a USDM spec is either a '88 or an '89...and that's it.

There's been a few different engines in the 929. You may be right though, i'm not entirely sure if we got the 2.5 v6 that was used in it in the states. Multiple sources indicate that there may be a few 2.2s here though.

Millenia is a different car, fwd with either 2.5 or 2.3 supercharged. Auto only, do not want.

Thanks for the tip on the manual transmission years! In that light, we'll open up search to an auto as well, but would prefer extra clean if it's an auto, and the 4th gen with the dohc motor would do nicely.

Here are a couple leads that don't say if they are manual or automatic:

    Well... it's a long story.

Let's just say that the 86-91 929 shares the same chassis as the Mazda Cosmo. And that i have a sneaking suspicion that the DOHC JE-ZE is another one of those hidden "gems" buried deep inside a luxobarge that nobody would ever think to mess with.

The entire thing started when i happened across a used MPV motor on ebay, and noticed that the intake manifold looked suspiciously like that of a Yamahammer SHO motor.

I also may or may not be the current high bidder for a pair of large IHI RBH8 turbos.

Yeah, and the suggestion from the Cosmo may or may not have come from someone else you know.....

Now the REAL question. How hard would it be to source the parts for the 2.2 motor mounts, and swap a certian dark horse single cammer into it? Cause, ya know... I'm thinking those 65mm turbos you have might feed said single cammer quite well...

Probably easy to find overseas. I'd also place a 50/50 bet you could just use the mounts from a B2200 with some minor trickery.

The hardest part would be figuring out if there's a trans combo readily available that would let you use the stock driveshaft and such.

  • Jan. 25, 2012 8:20 a.m. mndsm SuperDork

Find out what the trans was and go from there? I guarantee you that Mazda stole the tranny out of something else. Based on what the outline of the bellhousing on the one on eBay looked like- i'd almost guess it was a B-series truck trans. Or an FC trans...or.... or... Mazda isnt really known for designing 1 part for one car.

The one on Fleabay was an MPV trans... don't know if it was specific or not. I can find out.

I need to make a new thread so we can air all the shens to the world.

Now why would you go and do a thing like that? Of course, the real question is... if this is an idea that got out, what could he still be hiding?

Since it's hard to tell exactly what you are looking for, the DOHC V6 was used in the 929 from 1990 on. Therefore, in the U.S. the DOHC 6 and a manual transmission never happened.

If you are thinking of doing an engine swap into a 929, these of course had different sized V6s in other countries. A "similar" car may even have had the 3 rotor rotary engine. I've always thought that the 929 looked a little too much like the model that other markets got as the rotary-powered Roadpacer...or Roadking, or Roadsomething. (Sorry, my background on Japanese car trivia is limited.)

A similar car DID have a 3 rotor. Think Cosmo. It's sorta like a 929, but with less doors.

I know what a Cosmo is, and I have seen pix of the last gen. that Mazda had in production into the mid '90s (if I remember correctly). They also built a sedan model with, I believe, the 3 rotor engine. Supposedly, that was THE dullest looking/driving rotary powered vehicle ANYONE ever built. It looked sort of (if it wasn't) like a 1988 model 929.

Bite your tongue young man. This is by far not dull looking/or driving. Turbo 13B with reclining rear seats and a fridge. Doesn't sound dull to me.
