A "96 302", eh? Mustangs didn't have 302s in 1996. But Explorers did.....

If there's no rust that's a great price. If it's got an Explorer engine in it even better. No only did the Explorer get the GT40P style heads, but they come with a much better intake. The lower is an improved version of the old GT40 with a better path and the upper is a cast version of the old GT40 upper. If he's got the year right that's a great engine to start with. Jump to it.

That's the first time I've heard of needing a computer swap to run a particular cam.

Expanding on what Adrian wrote, the '96-97.5 Exploder 5.0 heads were GT40's which do not have the odd spark plug angle, allowing you to run any aftermarket header that will fit an E7. They have slightly larger chambers than the P heads but I believe they flow a tad better. Unfortunately the pistons are not forged and only about 8.5:1 compression, not really enough to run a hot cam.

I'd stab in a standard H.O. cam or something with a 114-116 degree lsa and drive the snot out of it.

IF the engine came out of a '96 Explorer if should be the GT40 heads and not the "P" heads. The "P" heads were introduced in '97 as a running change. Early '97's did get some GT40's.
