"Went in for an oil change and the mechanic said she needed a head gasket"???
That sounds kinda made up to me.... price is $1474.

Not a Saabaru! One of those for $1500 would be a "sight unseen" purchase decision. This is a 9-5 which is a GM platform.
In today's Saab environment that is likely high priced. I would rather have this one found on the same CL.
104k miles asking $2,200 with oil leak.

88k with 4 speed manual for $2,500.
My question is where did he take it to get the oil changed? If he took it to a quick lube with some 18 year old changing the oil, I would kinda doubt what the oil jockey says. My Jetta got "warm" one morning going to work. I popped the oil cap and saw it looked like it was milkshaking. When I checked the dipstick, changed the oil and did a compression check, it showed no issue. The Jetta never had an issue since then and ran perfectly.
Which years/models are the subaru twins? And yes, a blown HG diag from a Jiffy Lube place def. would throw up a red flag for me.
The Saab 9-2x was the Subaru twin. It was made in 2005 and 2006. The Aero models were the turbo ones but even the base (or 'Linear') model would be a fun driver.

But its not like Jiffy Lube is going to do a head job.
