so, it needs a $40 sensor (or $5 at any junkyard) and he hasn't had time to fix it?
Or it has a broken timing belt.

"It's an easy/cheap fix, but I haven't had time to do it" is a red flag on any CL ad.
Even if the engine is toast it still seems like that's a good deal IF the body is solid.

What do you look for to indicate a broken timing belt?

If the distributor doesn't turn while cranking, the cam is not connected to the crank, and that is a timing belt failure.
Starter is connected to crank, distributor is driven off of cam.
