The title pretty much said it all. I need an electric power steering pump for my build. I know the MR2 spyder has a decent pump but I would also entertain the idea of a different pump.

Who else makes a good one and who has one for sale?

I believe that Smart cars use them (if they have PS, which not all do). Might help if you are doing a parts search online. Can't speak as to it's quality.

Ebay is full of GM electrohydraulic pumps. Not sure what it would take to make them work for other applications though. I was lucky enough to find an MR2 pump, both modules, relay, and pressure line for $30 locally. Sold the modules for $130 on ebay

The GM stuff is attached to the steering column and from what I have read they are not good.

I guess I should give some background on what I am doing. I am puting a t78 turbo on a 5.3 chevrolet V8 in a Lexus IS300. I want to free up some room on the front of the engine so the easiest thing to remove is power steering. It is a track car so the AC is already gone.

Some Volvo's have electric power steering pumps as well.

What do the hybrids do as far as power steering? I thought they all ditched the traditional hydraulic ??

In reply to jrw1621:

Versa/Sentra/Rogue actually have an electric motor in the column under dash to provide assist, not a electric fluid pump

And what, drain the E36 M3ty battery even faster?!?!?!

Glad this thread came up, even if in the classifieds. No manual rack options for the newer Rangers and the PS pump is in the way for what I want to do.

What I was asking about the hybrids (and not just the purely plug in variety..) was don't most migrate away from the parasitic load incurred by a belt driven hydraulic pump? I seem to recall some evolving to an "On Demand" approach.

RX-8 has a full electric rack that's pretty nice. If you could get a good deal on one it might be lighter and simpler to use. It's supposed to be more efficient as well. Don't know how tough it would be to get the electronics working in another car though - probably too much of a pain to be worth it.

Lots of good suggestions. Does anybody have a pump for sale? I would really like a pump from the MR2 Spyder.

Got lucky on this one myself. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160534455701&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME%3AL%3AOU%3AUS%3A1123

New in box for $200. Felt like I did OK on that one.

This thread is super old. I tried the electric route and did not like it.
