Mazda offers a $3400 package on the new Miata that puts pretty red Brembos on the front and gets you a set of BBS wheels.

Ouch.

We've developed our own brake upgrade instead. We kept the stock rotor size, but wrapped them in Wilwood Powerlite calipers front and rear mounted on lightweight aluminum brackets. That saves 5.45 lbs per side in the front and 3.85 lbs per side in the rear. Yes, that's 18.6 lbs of weight reduction.

On top of the weight savings, the Powerlite is a rigid four-piston caliper that gives a much more solid pedal feel, without the mushiness that comes from caliper flex. And it's compact, which means you can run 15" wheels on the car if you'd like.

The caliper in the back is an exclusive one to Flyin' Miata that incorporates a parking brake function.

To recap: 18.6 lbs lighter. Better pedal feel. Smaller wheel. And here's the kicker: it's $1149 for full four wheel setup. We'll also sell just the fronts ($549) or the rears ($699) if you'd like.

That leaves you with $2251 in your budget for wheels and tires. Not bad.
