My 2000 P71 died last night. This morning, no turn over, lots of glitter in the oil. Dead motor. I found a local salvage yard with one from a 2003 with 56k on the clock for $550.

Question: Will a 5.4 2v fit in a 2000 Crown Vic with little hastle other than the intake monifold (for which I can get adaptors)?

OR... Should I just stick with the 4.6 and drive it?

Is it your daily? If so...

patgizz on here stuck a 5.4 in his CV without too much headache, wait for him to chime in. Sounds like the ideal swap for the car, too.

It is the DD. I was just looking at Crownvic.net and the swap "Sounds" like it's pretty easy. The guy I'll have doing it is a badass tech (I work at a Ford dealership). I know, I know, "do it yourself". I'm not really that comfortable doing that and they're letting me pay it off, so it's kind of a no brainer. I really wanna do it, but I don't wanna sacrifice the DD aspect.

Just because you can pay it off doesn't make it the smarter decision. Ever had a private student loan? I was uncomfortable doing the clutch in my RX-7. Driving it home after the operation, I was glad I saved myself $400.

it's a straightforward swap.

get manifold adapters, the proper flexplate for the transmission, and dive in.

the car really should have come with this motor. my fuel economy is not meaningfully worse, and the car is so much more responsive.

Before I paid a shop to swap a motor, I would just replace it.

New motor $550
Swap Labor $1000
Scrap Value $500 if you cut the cats off and sell a few odds n ends first.
Total you are out $2050

Local Craigslist has high mile ones for $2k and low mile ones for $4k, all newer than 2000.

dead serious, it'll probably be two extra hours of labor compared to doing the same job with a 4.6.

Granted by the time I get another the new 5.0 will be affordable, but hells yeah. John in FL has my old P71 and I'm begging him to do this swap (plus a 5-speed... mmmm).

I'd really like a step by step guide. LOL What are the main things I need to worry about, what do I need to fabricate/cut/remove/etc. I PM'd you. If you could, shoot me your number and I promise I'll only bother you if I REALLY need to. I'd love to have a 331 P71. I'll change my plates to that too.

I am about to order the 5.4. What flexplate do I need to get?

belteshazzar

from a '99 or '00 mustang GT, but only one who's engine came from the windsor plant.

OK, so the flexplate from a Windsor motor works. Is that the 6 or 8 bolt one?

eight. but you can't use the flexplate the 5.4 came with.

Awesome. Once here, what do I need to look out for or modify before/during installation?

swap over your oil pan & engine mount brackets.

put new valve cover gaskets in now. while they're not a high failure thing, they're about to be a lot harder to do in the future.

keep your pneumatic cutoff wheel handy at install time. you'll need it to trim the wiper tray as you're reassembling everything. of course you can cut the hood in advance while you wait around. you should be able to see the section i cut out in my youtube video.

get a new egr tube. yours will be a rusty piece of crap. once the 5.4 is installed, cut the new tube in half. install both halves on the motor. there will be about a one inch gap between them once installed. get yourself a chunk of metal tube that you can weld in place. tack it all together on the engine, then remove it and finish the piece off right.
