The Quaife differential is debated quite a bit for these drive units.  What I figured out is that it depends which motor controller is used.  Some strongly recommend it others strongly discourage.  I think it comes down to the CAN messages that are being sent and that some have figured out how to power the motor so that it is not needed (or wanted)

Are you planning to use a central vehicle controller that connects to the motor control over CAN?

Is that something people have sorted?  An enginelab controller like I use on the frankenferrari I'm sue could hadnle that (read wheel sensor, throttle sensor, whatever ) and send the appropriate CAN messages tot he motor controller but it requires a bit of figuring out what the appropriate messages are exactly.

I have sourced the controller from EV Controls

I guess I was confused by all the talk/questions about the LSD vs handling it electronically with what looks like 2 motors in the power unit pic.  That got me thinking you would need 2 motor controllers and maybe a central processor  reading the pedal , wheel speed, steering angle sensors and deciding  how juice to command from each motor.....you know, because in my mind I can way over complicate just about anything no matter how simple it SHOULD be. :)

It is just one motor.  The other side is the inverter.

In reply to ElectricSuperCar :

ahh, that makes sense, why any concern with a LSD then?  it seems you want it unless you're planning to use an ABS setup that handles the job?  Sorry for all the questions....

As I understand it, if the controller is capable of controlling the motor to handle the aspects of the differential; then it can be a detriment to put in a LSD which changes the way the controller sees and distributes the power.  If your controller cannot handle the aspects of the differential; then a LSD is a great solution for this.

How does it control it? It is a single motor going through what appears to be a conventional open differential. That leaves the ABS which you are not using. It could use wheel speed sensors and cut power when it senses slip but that requires wheels speed sensors, that you are not using, and is a pretty lousy substitute for a good limited slip diff.

To be quite honest, I do not know how they control it.  When I was researching Tesla controllers, companies like EVTV and zero-ev highly recommended a Quaife Limited Slip.  While other companies like EV-controls and 057tech do not recommend it.  They say it will run with LSD but several of their customers have requested to include a Quaife LSD and they have all later removed and reinstalled the open differential.

Is that a double flare?  It looks like a single in the pic but I'm guessing thats just the picture.

Love the project.

@mke,

Thanks for your comment about single flare.  Because I am paranoid, I took apart my brake lines to double check the flares.  I ended up finding one that must have slipped in the flare tool and ended up with just a single flare.  Got everything remade and put back together.  Thanks again.

This is pertinent to my interests. I have dreamed of a Tesla drivetrain in a early 70’s el Camino. Interested to see where you take this!
