Isn't that the briggs engine that has a strong propensity to grenade the rod? I seem to recall my dad getting more than one freebie mower that way, they broke hard enough to ventilate the block and bend the cam enough to mess up the cam bearings.

I've grenaded a few myself. Got one with the flat 2 cylinder now. If this one blows its getting a 13b rotary.

Usually from being worked too hard or not being maintained.

I worked mine too hard mowing a field. Going fine. Going fine. Going fine. CLANK. CRUNCH. GROAN. Smoke.

I'd imagine using a good diesel rated oil, Shell Rotellas 15w40 or a straight 30 diesel oil(SAE 30HD), and avoiding bogging it down will keep it going.
