I have a 1968 Datsun 2000 that has been in the garage since 1976. It is a complete car, motor runs, but needs to be restored. Does anyone know how much this car is worth?

I hate to do this to you, but.....
It depends.
Where are you? Why was it stored? Was it stored properly? How many owners? Original motor? Original trans? Original Paint? Do you have documentation of it's life prior to '76? Was it ever hit? Is it stock? How many miles on it? Any rare factory options? Any rust? If so, how much and where? Was anything heavy stored on it?
That's just to start. Once you get past that, then there are a thousand other questions.
And pictures are really worth several thousand words. So post some here!!

It is in Indiana. My dad bought this car from his brother back in the early 70's. I believe there was 1 owner prior to my uncle. Something happened with the transmission where it wouldn't shift, and my dad never got it repaired. I don't think it was ever wrecked. Everything is original on the car, including the tires/wheels. Nothing heavy was ever stored on it and it has less than 5000 miles on it. I would like to restore it, but not sure where to get parts. I also want to figure out what it's worth in current condition and if restored. I will get pics out here later this week Thank you...

where is the car in Indiana? I live in Chicago and could stop by if it is NW Indiana.
Posting a lot of clear pictures would help.
Do you have a clear title and all keys? That is worth extra.

Ahhhh, it's basically worthless. But I will do you the favor of taking it off your hands for a couple of hundred bucks.
My first "sports car" was a 1600 back in about 1975. I loved that little car and wouldn't mind finding another some day.

Theres one for sale on Hemmings now. Description sounds better, at least its running. Might try asking this guy for pictures and also search ebay including completed auctions, and look at the car auction sites like Russo Steele, RM, Mecam etc.

These are great cars. I have a friend with the nicest 2000 I have ever seen and it is great to drive. A car that needs to be restored and runs is worth about $4000-$6000 and that would be a car with very little rust whatsoever. A non-runner is realistically worth around $3000 again if it has little rust and if it is complete. A restored 1600 can be worth almost $20000 if it is a perfect restoration(think a show winner at Amelia). Basically if the car is solid it is worth restoring and will likely be worth more than what you have in it especially if you can do some of the work yourself.

this guy wanted $500 with no title. then came down to $300. Illinois area.
I won this on ebay for $128. All rough, but complete, no title, really rusty.

This forum is not setup to upload pics. You can only upload an icon or reader rides photo. You have to link them from a website. Use a free web photo site to upload and store the pics then link the photo using the camera icon and the photo will show up in the post.

The car starts and runs good. All original including filters! Fresh oil and plugs. The lights, wipers, horn, turn signals all work. Less than 55,000 miles. At this point the car needs tach hooked up, temp sensor replaced, clutch?, hydrolic systems rebuilt (clutch and brakes), and of course interior freshened.

I think these are great cars. The MGB the brits should have built. Some parts may be hard to come by. Somebody on the GRM side is very familiar with these cars. You may want to link to that board. I have no idea about the value of the car. Knowing the history and it being in running condition are good.
Are you considering selling it or restoring it? Looks like a good car to keep and fix up.

Another enthusiast publication with the initials HS&EC has an article this month about a guy in LA who did a less than sympathetic resto of his 2000 roadster. It's a total rebuild with updated Nissan engine, transmission, suspension, Nismo parts, etc. Looks vintage on the outside but definitely 21st century under the skin. I don't think he did any of the work himself so it's a big-bucks conversion, but an interesting approach nevertheless.

I'm going to agree with the first statement and disagree with the second.
The Datsun 1600 was in the MGB class, not the 2000, and they were worthy competitors in the early days. A 2000 cc car was up a class, in competition with the TR4 etc.
Personally, I feel that the appearance and styling of the Datsun is inferior (i.e. pleases me less) than many British cars - it looks awkward to me, a not unusual failing of Japanese cars (the notable exception being the 240Z).
OTOH, it would be hard not to agree that the technical specification was better on the Datsun, with rugged, willing engines and 5 speed transmissions in the 2000.
