OK, I'm stumped.

I was looking at the Rae Davis website today and saw this "MG" racing at some British circuit (Goodwood, Silverstone or another....not sure which).

Anyway, this "MG" sure doesn't look familiar to me. Any ideas?

Garsh, that can't be an MG. At least not the body. Maybe it is someone's one-off MG special based on a MG chassis. None of the body panels looks MGBish, though, and you don't see many home-builts with a roof/windshield combination that factory-looking.

Really looks like someone chopped the front off an Italian car of some kind then put an MG motor in it? Any more shots available? Rear-end?

It's an MG, one we didn't get. Never exported. I don't remember the model name, but a model was profiled in a competing mag not too long ago, IIRC. I'll see if I can find the article and post it's name. It's a mid 60s car.

After 45 years of studying British sports cars from that era there’s not a lot I don’t already know. But this one had me stumped. I’ve never seen it before. Amazing. I can see why it didn’t make it to production though. Car design may be subjective, but it looks like somebody hit an MGA coupe with the ugly stick ... probably the same guy who designed the Pontiac Aztec, Fiat Multipla and Nissan Cube.

(Speaking of car design being subjective, and maybe this should be a topic of debate in a separate thread, but where does Pete Brock get off disrespecting Ford with the new Mustang in the current issue of CM? Sure, he has a 50+ year old diploma in car design from the Art Center, but c'mon, the new Mustang isn't as bad as he makes it seem. And as far as technology goes, the new V6 will put out over 300 HP and deliver 30+ mpg. Not too bad).

Exactly.

The MGA coupe was a lovely car (I've owned several) but was of the early 1950s styling idiom. That was obviously an attempt by the factory to get into the 1960s with a sharper edged car, but they never finished the job - that is still just an unfinished prototype that someone got and went racing with.

I haven't gone through my MG books to look for one, but I'd love to see a rear 3/4 view - that would make or break it for me. The front end could have easily been finished off with an MGB style grille, or perhaps a big Healey oval and would have looked quite nice - probably better than trying to get an MGA style grille on it.
