Inspired by the thread about disposing coolant: It would be a good (but probably short) article if you listed different automotive fluids and how to dispose of them properly.

    motor Oil
    coolant
    Trans fluid
    gear oil
    bad/old gasoline
    paint

I like this idea. Personally I just package everything up and drop them off at the track when I go.

Thats kind of rude to bring home fluids to the track - they have to pay to have it removed.

For oils / gas, find someone with a waste oil heater. Right now you could probably get $$ for oil if your up north. Put an add on CL.

Latex paint can be dried & picked up by local trash pickup by me (michigan).

Actually, why not expand it to disposal in general? Batteries are tricky, for instance.

What goes in the trash? Where do you take stuff that doesn't go in the trash?

What do I do with that old radiator with a gunshot hole? The bloodstained carpet from the trunk of the car? The tire iron with bone fragments on it? How do you get the fingerprints off?!?

Batteries are easy in my area. If you're talking about small household ones, simply put a bunch of em in a bag and they go with recycling.

I'm pretty sure that in Connecticut, anyone who sells the stuff has to recycle it. I know that Advance PepZone collects used oil here.

Which is why I was pretty disappointed last week when I saw two gallons of oil left by the side of the road, next to the river.

In my county there is a recycling center set up at the county fairgrounds, once each in the spring and the fall for hard to recycle items. They take all fluids, tires, TV's, computers, appliances, glass, plastic, cardboard, old furniture etc. They'll even reclaim refrigerant from refrigerators, a/c units etc. so you don't have to throw 'em over the hill n e more. I save up all my recyclables and drop them off all at one time. I bet there is one in your area.

Varies so much by state and even town. Some towns charge $5 to drop off a dead battery at a landfill, others don't; same thing with tires. My town charges nothing for oil, but charges for contaminated containers the oil is in.... and they don't want to hear about coolant.

I can go three towns over to a different landfill, and they'll take the oil AND the containers....but charge you for a 'fridge. This is just one small section in Ct., so doing an article for a national publication is just about impossible. Oh, and I had to get a sticker (free!!!! my tax dollars worked, WOW!) just to get into the recycling center.
