I read about the Flyin' Miata that was upgraded by GRM... amd that they are having heat problems. I instruct at NASA NorCal with my 252 whp Miata at the track. This summer I have driven on several 105+ degree days and have had NO problem with heat.

What you need to do is add water injection after the intercooler with a small 60cc/min sprayer in the intake manifold. Also then tap off of that with two more sprayers to spray through the intercooler, oil cooler and radiator.

I can show you pix of my set-up... but this works amazingly well considering the huge amount of energy required to vaopize water. My engine temps stayed at or below 210 for each 20 minute run in that high 105 degree heat. I run two gallons of water per 25 minutes of very hard driving on the track.

Our turbo Miata project only has overheating issues when it's spent quite a bit of time on track; it endures Florida heat and humidity year round without issue for street duty. It takes several laps of sustained boost to peg the temp gauge.

Thanks for the suggestion on water injection. We've considered using water injection for the Miata, and there are others in our fleet that could use the same sort of attention as well. Expect an in-depth look at water injection for a project car in the near future.

In reply to Tom Heath: Hi Tom:

The mister/sprayers to the radiator make the most difference in heat control. The injector mister gives me insurance as I've tuned the car to not require the added intake cooling. I'm now pushing 338 whp and use the Hydra - wow what a difference in driveability!! I look forward to your findings with clever uses for water injection...
