Every military aircraft and all commercial airliners use retreads that have been recycled umpteen times and can get quite a few years on them. When was the last time the NTSB blamed major a crash on a tire? Or even general aviation, go to your local small airport and start checking the tire date codes on the common Cessnas and Pipers that are sitting on the ramp, you might be shocked.

Kind of a worst case scenario.
A set of brand new looking, still sporting the nubbies coopers put one of my cars into a curb with their completely traction free antics. Turns out they were 11 years old. Probably only had 100 miles on them though.
It is possible their scariness was just due to them being coopers though.
