    You know as sophisticated as I thought that was when I was a mere lad, looking at it now it seems so crude.

    That doesn't stop me from wanting it, but it still isn't the ultimate toy as I thought it was.

    crude.. but effective. F1 should be more like that car.

    So the Hewland gear box... Can you use a VW transaxle as a direct replacement? I know you can flip the ring gear to run the veedub in that direction. Other than the 'Lotus' adapter ring (which is still available) do you need a Hewland specifically to make this work?

    What is the power to weight ratio of a car like this?

    A xflow will get a 160-180hp out of a race engine, IIRC. The car is maybe 800 lbs. Just my guess really...

    My buddy had one back in the early 1970's. The Lotus 51 was one of the original 1600cc Formula Ford's.
