My youngest picked up a 1983 P-Type Supra, 164,000 miles, 5 speed, white with terracota interior. 2 Owner car with the only real downside is the missing left rear flare. Runs great...
$200 - leaves plenty of "upgrade cash" from the sale of the 99 FRC....
Found a left rear flare at a local Pull A Part for the grand total of $7.88

Are these really heavy? Handle horribly?
Reason being, why aren't they *at least as popular as the AE86? I'll bet you could get one of the turboe'd toyota 6's in there or even possibly an LS. I always liked the TRON styling and thought they had far better proportions than the AE86
I think the old Celi-Supra's like that were a shade over 3,000 lbs. At their high point they made something like 155 hp, if I remember right. I'd love to get one. I think they're cool looking cars.
I have thought about one of these because i think they look so good. But they are slightly heavy for the power they make. However i have heard the 3rd gen motor swaps, NA and turbo, are pretty easy and if you really have a mind to do it you could put what ever you wanted in to in these cars.... LSX, 2JZ,1JZ whatever.
ive always thought ae86's were crazy ugly. The supra is way more cool(looks wise)

I've been 30 seconds away from buying one of these. I arrived at the seller's house with cash in my pocket, but he'd just sold it literally half a minute before I turned up. I was way pissed off that he didn't wait for me to get there, as I think the MA61 is one of the coolest looking cars from the 80's.
I like the squeeze-bulb (think blood pressure cuff) lumbar adjustment and a trillion doohickeys.
Bonus points if it has a louvre shades on the back.

I think the NASA TT weight is 2759 - not a real lightweight for the HP - I think it is classed TTF. The suspension seems to be pretty good. I see no reason why it cannot handle well. Lots of engine swap options - but getting it light and nimble is the first order of business. Suspension parts are available - if a bit pricey...
It has the louver style wing on the back hatch.
Lopracer - I had to get him out of the white FRC - afraid he was going to start making me feel bad, also. He was lapping well at Roebling last weekend.
I always liked those. They're just so obnoxiously eighties, especially with the big flares & ground effects treatment. And you even got louvers too!
Power-to-weight sounds a bit like my Starion or 944S (both at 170ish BHP and ~3000 lbs.) Not a featherweight but not "slow" either. It'll be fun.

Some day I'd love to see a Japanese muscle-car trackday shootout between say, a Mk.II or Mk.III Supra, a Starion, an R32 Skyline, and maybe a 300ZX. Hmm, I wonder if there's anyone around on here who runs a magazine who might write such an article?

Stock 5 speed p-types are around the 2950lb range. Not light, but not too heavy to still be fun, it just requires a bit more tire and a bit more room than a weeniemobile. Maybe I'm biased as I grew up around the muscle car scene and these things are light if you look at it from that side. 82's had 145hp The 83 has 150hp with the move to the TCCS EFI system with ignition control, 84 got 160hp with a compression bump and redesigned intake manifold, 85-6 bumpped up to a massive 161hp with the addition of a knock sensor LOL.
BTW the interior is probably "terracotta" calling it red might get you kicked in the jimmy by some folks :-)

It looks like NASA TT will let you get the weight down to 2759 (with driver) that should help.
Our stock 120,000 mile 944S was quicker then this one at this stage.

Wow, $200? That thing's in awesome shape. You got a good deal. Junkyard turbo it, put some deep dish old skool wheels on it, and slam it to the ground.
That price is amazing.
I tried to buy one over a decade ago while in high school but somebody t-boned me on the test drive. Ended up with a '80 fastback SR-5 corolla that I liked better anyway.

It feels faster than 150HP - we will look to see what we can do cheap on it to help HP....
It is definitely quicker then the 84 CRX we had earlier this year...
Theres a lot of power to be found in the exhaust area. A good header and cat back will get you 15hp easy. Then it gets harder, the stock EFI is really lame and just keeps dumping more fuel and runs unbelievably rich (mine runs around 10.9:1 at wot), obviusly not very helpful at making power. If youre a propellerhead then a megasquirt would be near the very top of the list for cheap mods with a good hp/$ return. A switch to the N/A 86.5-92 3.0 supra engine will give you a nice 55hp 40tq bump with a better flowing and simpler designed 24valve head and are pretty cheap to come by. The header and exhaust that works on the stock motor will work on this one also.
And yes theyre not all that slow, actullay decently fast when compared to other early 80's cars, were talking about a time when corvettes only had 180hp or so with 2x the displacement and small sedans had about 80hp. The hp rating is low but its got more torque than HP.
