Looking at buying a beater pickup, gf's brother in law has a 91 Dodge which has light body damage on the bed and in the process of doing the damage he knocked the rear wheel off. I'm assuming that I could just replace the axle shaft on that side and get back in motion, but worst case and the whole rear end is shot, what years will interchange or bolt in. The truck is 2WD 318/auto. Don't know if it has a limited slip or much beyond that, he keeps telling me there are 10 bolts on the diff cover.

Off the top of my head I recall that the 90's body style dodge 1500 was a cosmetic change more than a mechanical one. Could I get the whole rear end out of one of those? Also on a chrysler differential is there an visual way to tell if it has a limited slip?

If it's 10 bolts and the axle tubes are 3" OD for the full width then it's an 8 1/4" rear. If the axle tubes neck down as they get to the center it's a 7 1/4. Both are C-clip rears. I'd be surprised if it's a 7 1/4. And if it is, don't put another one in there. That's the weak one.

If it's an 8 1/4 you can go with either another 8 1/4 or a 9 1/4 (12 bolt ,kind of diamond shaped cover). The pinion location on both is the same so the existing driveshaft will work. Look under '84-93 Rams for the rear. I think it was '84 when they went from the 4.5" wheel blot pattern to the 5". It might have been '85.

Measure from one brake backing plate to the other, head to a junk yard. Mine had a rear end out of a Cordoba.
