So the official word from Ford is that the next Shelby GT500 will make 650 horsepower, 600 lb-ft of torque and clear 200 miles per hour. Yeah. Camaro ZL1 what?

For those of you still thinking that the late 60's were the golden age of the muscle car, it's time to wake up and smell the smoking rubber. Hot damn!

we have been in the real golden age of HP since the mid 90s. They have finally figured out how to make High HP, High miliage, and low emissions.

    Aren't computers wonderful?

Now, if they could just get some incentive to make that 2500lbs... they could get to 200mph without needing the whole salt flats to do it.

And wide stripes are back, YES!!.

Dear lord that is a lot of power. 150hp more then my gen 3 viper in Stock form with probably another 100hp or so 1K away in tuning and snout change.

I'm quite impressed with Fords offerings as of late. They seem to have figured it out.

    I wonder the cost.

This year's GT500 starts at $48,810. I'm guessing that the 2013 car will still cost less than a new M3.

At 3850 lbs dry, I think the "pony car" vs "muscle car" debate is fairly settled, and it didn't go to the former.

Speaking of pony cars, how is this months drift rival challenge going, bud?

My Mustang weighs 2780 lbs. Yes, I think the Mustang has migrated into the musclecar category.

that's sad. How much of that HP is just wasted just trying to get the car moving?

No. But that Mustang is a good end result, so I guess I'll suffer through them.

I hate to say this, but as a physics major, I must.

All of it. What else would it do?

Oh come on now, some of it is wasted moving the driver and any passengers and/or cargo, and some of it is wasted as heat between the tires and pavement.

I'm just curious, how many other stock 4 seat, 200mph cars exist? I assume a 911 Turbo and the Ferrari 612 will top 200, but what else? We can include 5 seaters too if the Panamera Turbo/Aston Martin Rapide/M5/AMG twin turbo V12 cars hit 200mph. I'm guessing there's probably a pretty good list of cars I'm forgetting about.

As much of a Ford fan as I am, and a multiple-time Mustang owner (I'm on #5... I think)... I'm curious how "200mph" is determined. Have we put this on a test track and seen it do 200mph? Or is this a "with this power and this gearing it can theoretically do 200mph"?

Because if it's the latter, the Vipers had the rpm and gearing to do 300mph.

    Burn massive quantities of rubber.

911 Turbo only does 193, 612 Scag does 199. Your list is:

    • Bentley Flying Spur - 200
    • Bentley Continental GT - 200
    • Porsche 911 (997) GT2 - 203
    • Bentley Continental SuperSports - 204
    • BMW M5 (the last gen one) - 205

And now the 5.8L GT500. That is not a large list!

Bout damn time people figured out that adding fuel pressure to a carb to increase HP is only a good idea for so long...
