    You guys should have a $2010 Challenge class at the next UTCC.

    I was kidding when I wrote that, but now that we have our $2010 E30 underway, all of our team members want to enter it at the 2010 UTCC event in July. "It would be a great shake-down for the October Challenge", one guy said. Ha!

    I talked to Joe at GRM last week and he got Per in on the conversation, who said he'd buy the fastest $2010 Challenge car at UTCC "a beer and cheezeburger".

    We can't pass up that sweet reward.

    So... who's in!? Let's bring some $200X Iron to the UTCC and show these guys with 1/4 million dollar Daytona Prototypes how guys on a budget do it.

    Our car can barely roll around the shop while being pushed in February, and we're now trying to make a major track event in July now. Crazy...

    I'd consider it, but i am lacking liscenses, and i doubt the car would be legal.

    Same boat, and cash for licenses would be hard to come by. I'm thinking of buying a "bolt in cage" and modifying it to fit our challenge car. Open track sounds like fun, but the cash outlay in 4 months would be killer.

    If a full cage and a proper seat could be discounted from the budget, I'd be SO down to enter a car. Me and my friends have talked about this and how much we wish there was a road racing time-trials element to the Challenge.

    Fair...do you have a online build thread/diary anywhere? I'm curious to know more about your V8 e30 build.

    And I agree, a $20xx class at the UTCC would be great!

    I would try to make it, I have actually been thinking about entering anyway, I just need personal safety equipment, cage, the usual

    You don't need a full cage for NASA Time Trials (the rules and org. under which the UTCC is run). You don't even need a 4-point roll bar, but its a good idea. We ran several NASA TT events last year without a cage, harness, driving suit - just a helmet.

    Here's Hanchey's TTB EVO X (just a seatbelt) followed by me in our old LS1 E36 (with a cage/harness/race seat).

    NASA TT safety requirements are more relaxed than their W2W classes - its barely more than their HPDE. You do need a transponder to get times in TT, but you can usually rent one at the track. Otherwise... if you have a helmet, you're good (exception: convertibles need a 4-point, just like in NASA HPDE events)

    We have documented our $2010 E30 build on 3 forums, including Vorshlag, Bimmerforums and Corner-Carvers (all 3 sites use the same back end, so its easy to duplicate my update posts to all 3 in seconds):

    We've had a helluva lot more interest in this car than I expected. I lost count of how many team members we have on this project now (9, I think?) because people keep coming by, seeing the car, and wanting to join. We're having a blast and haven't even put the final engine in the car yet.

    we've talked heavily of bringing gutty to VIR for the UTCC. i talked to scott lear after challenge for a second, and he said it was a good idea.

    I'm aware of what's required by the rules, but I'm not going to put a student on track in a car that's not as safe as possible. One injury would be the death of our program. We've had to make several decisions in our build thus far that most likely would adversely affect performance (or at least not help) to make the car as safe as possible.

    Reading the other threads on GRM right now about driving on the street I'd say everything needs a cage!

    Seriously though, I'd cage a Challenge/track/UTCC car pretty much no matter what. Anything more intensive than HPDE pretty much should require one (and seats/harnesses/gear/fire systems/etc).

    Yeahhh... i'm a little apprehensive about driving my car down the quarter mile without a cage, let alone a TT.
