So I was talking to a friend about the event, and he was seriously interested in coming with me. he said that he looked at the rules and there was a rule about having a scca license? How do you get this license? are you able to race if you dont even have a valid drivers license?

SCCA liscense not necessary. Sure he wasn't looking at the Ultimate Track Car Challenge rules?

I believe the autocross portion is governed by SCCA rules which do require a valid drivers license.

Drag portion falls under NHRA, not sure of there rules but I would imagine a license is going to be required.

To drive, you have to have a driver's license. You could build the car, come to the event, and let the Pro drivers drive it if you wanted.

This isn't that kind of message board so please show some respect.

If the folks at your SCCA arent checking your license before you drive they they are in danger of loosing their insurance.

Im 24 sorry for the rant but I cant see why a event with race cars requires a drivers license. I work on and drive outlaw 10.5 cars which make 100x the power that any car at the evnt makes. I have never once needed a drivers license to drive a car that is way more of a liability.

The realistic answer? Because autocross events are not races, they are "Driver skill competitions" and as such require licensed drivers. The bottom line, its much cheaper to get insurance on an autocross than an actual sanctioned race.

Your average SCCA (or other organization) Autocross is barely breaking even on entry fees vs. expenses so higher priced insurance is not something they need. Most tracks which run outlaw races and other such events have higher entry fees as well as other revenue sources (spectator fees, concessions, etc) to offset the cost of insurance (and based solely on the "local" tracks I've been too most of them are probably grossly under insured) They also offset their insurance liability by requiring a certain level of safety equipment, roll cages, harnesses, etc.

SCCA, assuming the state they are in permits it (NJ does not) does offer some autocross classes for karts which are open to younger drivers without licenses.

Well, the Challenge isn't until fall. Gives you plenty of time to get your liscense.

well you proved a valid point. Im not eligible until november. So I guess that gives me a year to get prepared. What about a hardship license?

A hardship license is to get you back and forth to work or sometimes school, only. I don't think scamming the system would be looked upon kindly.

Question, and if you don't want to answer, that's fine.... but why do you not have a license at age 24? What happened?

I was a childish drivers when I was younger.. Its not scaming the system its a license.

I'm not sure of the ratio, but I would bet the majority of cars are driven by pro drivers, not their owners. Since it is a builder's competition, not a driver's competition, it's pretty normal.

Where are you racing that doesn't require a license for a car that can do 200 mph? NHRA requires an NHRA competition license. ORSCA also requires an NHRA competition license, and a valid state driver's license.

Methinks he doth protest too much...

It is if you show up and try to race on it. That's improper use of a hardship license.

Lol I was being a little sarcastic with the 100x statement. I race at a local track that is owned by neil chance converters. I have yet to make a 1/4 pass I only run the 1/8 mile no license needed. I dont even pull the chute.

Ozark Raceway Park? Still requires driver's licenses (except for Jr. Dragster) and competition licensing to the E.T.

I'm not trying to nit-pick you, but you are making a big scene over licensing which as far as I am aware is required virtually everywhere. Just because you've never been checked doesn't mean it's not in the rules.

I can't imagine a venue that wouldn't require it. It would blow their insurance, which is a risk no owner would want.

The good news about the Challenge is that there is nothing requiring you to drive. You can bring the winning car, have a blast, and not need a license.
