I run the Toyo R1R 195's (15x6.5) on my FX16. These tires do not like a lot of heat. When autocrossing in warmer months, they must be cooled with water from a garden sprayer or they get real greasy (slow). In your island climate this would not be ideal.

plus they're now finding that the 195 isn't the only size of R1R that has the magic pixie dust compound all the way to the cords ( and no I don't know which sizes ... just that there are a lot national level drivers that have done a lot of testing this winter with some surprising results )

Yeah, in addition to tangenting onto slicks, I also brought Oregon into it, to complete the job of screwing up the OP's thread... Sorry!

Thread resurrection: Decided I'm going for it. I'm gonna make room for 15x8s and see what the options are when these Star Specs wear down, Hankook RS3s and BFG Rivals would both be acceptable.

205/50/15s on a 15x8 would be stretched though so the only fallback size would be 225/50/15. I pretty much have to special order any tires I want for the 'rolla anyways now, the local shops don't stock anything more extreme than a "summer performance tire."

This is the same setup on the AE92 Levin belonging to the famous Bazda of MRP New Zealand:

I ordered the Rivals & they're due around the middle of next month. I'll be sure to post a report after the first event on them.

Bringing this back from the dead as I'm looking at a set of 15x8 wheels. Any updates on 225/45/15 vs 225/50/15 tire choice options?

Pretty much all 225/45s are out of stock at the moment as far as i know. Which is scary.

I'd expect that Everything in 15" is slowly vanishing as tire sizes continue to grow. On the Locost forum there are plenty of people who argue that 15" is all you need and that anything larger is needlessly big. Yes it is, unless you can't get the 15" sizes you want for wide sticky tires. It's a problem that's only going to get worse.

I "heard" that the rivals are being redone for the coming year. All of the other sizes are discounted at Tirerack.

I "heard" that the RS3 will be available mid march in this size.

I "heard" that the R1R will be available in this size at 200 treadwear this spring as well.

It's winter. So the extreme street tires are out of stock. Expect the R1R, Rival and RS3 to reappear in spring. Not "Florida spring" (which starts on January 2) but Northeast spring

Weird coincidence, I just ran into this thread searching for options in this size again. It's gonna happen, but the new wheel & tire setup will cost me as much as a decent used car (as in, more than a Challenge budget) so it's gonna take some saving up.

And yeah it looks like there's a freak 225/45/15 shortage at the moment...

This maybe used to be true, but there's a growing number of smaller cars that require tires in the 22-24" diameter range, so maybe the trend will be reversed.

It'd be nice if they still made high performance 185/70-13 tires though, for the five remaining people with early RX-7s.

The increasing number of 225/45s out there is having me contemplate 15x9s for the Quantum. Because the Sport Quattro had 15x9s. Probably will not be able to find 245/35s for them, so 225/45 would be acceptable.

I would be careful comparing 225/50/15s and 225/45/15s as they are pretty substantially different in height and in what tires are available in each size. 225/50 in street tires is basically extinct unless you want to run Kumho AST's (dont) or Falken 912s (slightly less dont) or unless you count the Toyo R888 as a street tire.

I do a lot of tire window shopping and to me there is actually very little overlap between those two sizes despite their seeming similarity.

Looked at going to the 225 on Rabbit for a minute and scurried back to the 205/50/15 as they were just too wide to run without sandblasting the body. On the fence between the Rivals, R1R, and the RS3. Leaning towards the Rival but would love a bit more tred depth...

It is all fuzzy math anyways....a Brand A 205/50 measures out different than brand B, and C....Hoosier is the worst at this. One example is I went from a 205/50/15 to a 215/40/16 (both on 7" wide wheels) only see the 215's were noticeably narrower

Thread re-resurrection!

Looking for new 225/45/15 autocross rubber for the Manic Miata. I have a tire trailer and I'm buying 15x9s to go with the tires.

New Hohos aren't in the budget. Takeoffs might be but I'd like to get more than a handful of events out of these tires. I'm regionally competitive but certainly not going to the Nats any time soon.

Suggestions? Thanks.

We have a new player to the table: Kumho makes the V720 in the magic size.

I'm not sure what's winning autocrosses these days. I assume Rivals.

Oh, I understand that. But I've got enough sauce that getting the power down requires wider rubber. It's not a stance thing or an ego thing.

You may find something good. If you can get 1/2 the use out of a tire for 1/4 the cost that's a win right? Did you get the same wheels that I posted up about from TR?

Rival S & RE71R are the "cheater" EPS tires to have.

BTW, still saving up for those 15x8s.
