    Comparing a $250 DB to a top-level racing bike is like comparing a Kia to a Porsche. They are both cars and both will get you from point A to point B easily at legal speeds. The difference is a high end racing bicycle is more attainable by an enthusiast with the means and desire. And when you get into amature racing, it becomes easier to justify when attempting to shave seconds and/or gain a little bit of an edge.

    How did your HED3's hold up. Back when I used to race a bit I saw a pair of Rev-X blow themselves to smithereens on the street and I have been riding aluminum wheels since. Bit scared of carbon on wheels with carbon spokes

    HED3's are bulletproof. Rev-X's are not. There have also been some reports of R-Sys carbon spokes failing with drastic consequences so I would steer clear of carbon spokes, but the HED3's don't fall under that umbrella. Plenty of heavy guys putting serious miles on HED3's without issue.
