The amazing thing is that this car is street driven and kept in a carport just a few hundred yards from the salt air of the Great South Bay on Long Island.
However, from inside sources at the (then) Amity Volvo where it was being serviced, once the mileage started getting up there Volvo NA was very good about taking care of the rust issues as they cropped up. The car (supposedly) has more than a few trips to the body shop for new metal.
Considering I've owned a few high mile Volvos myself ('67 122S with around 250K, a few 100K plus 140s and a two owner PV544 reputed to have in excess of 900K on it) I can testify that the road will wear out before the mechanicals will.

He had this car at the Carlisle Import and Kit Car Show a few years ago. I stopped and talked to him about it. Seemed to be a quiet, unassuming kind of guy. He told me he just liked driving and thought nothing of jumping in the car on a Friday night and driving all weekend to someplace he hadn't been to before. 2.8 million miles is a lot of weekends!

Yep, sounds like Irv. Met him a few year ago back when the car only had 1.8 million miles on it. Came to our small local European car show. Real nice guy, down to earth. A real enthusiest at heart.

Funny thing, I was driving down the highway in Michigan last year and I see a P1800. I start saying to my wife, 'some guy has put over a million miles on that type of car', then I see the MILLMILR license plate and realize that is the actual car. He certainly drives it since he had to be at least 12 hours from Long Island.

I travel for sales and always wonder about this car. Since I have almost driven 400,000 miles in 11 years; what car could I buy that will give me 500,000 miles and have a similar spirit?
Mercedes Benz C 300 Sport - 6 speed manual trans. $34,000.
Yeah right; I have to stop drinking my afternoons away......

Found this over on Autopia. A 400K Acura Legend. Of course it's just a baby compared to the Volvo but it's the condition the owner has kept it in that's interesting. Also he has kept track of all repairs. Pretty cool.

I've known a number of people with earlier Acura Legends with 250,000 to 300,000 miles on them and they seemed to be doing nothing special to keep them on the road. Fluids, tires, brake pads. That's it. And they do look the business...

Years ago I saw an 83 Porsche 944 wit 550k miles. Car was in the same concour class as my 84 944 with 70k on it.
It was a one owner car with unopened engine or gearbox.

I have a friend in insurance sales who puts over 400K on his Lexus 400s before he gets another. He buys them with 200K from an associate. When he gets them past 400K he sells or trades them to his painter. There is no telling how many miles they have on them now, but they are still going.

Interesting. At a very cool little hotel/steakhouse in Rolla, Missouri called Zeno's there's a big display about that Volvo and the owner on the wall, there's some connection, like he stops there whenever he passes through on Route 66.
I used to think I had high miles on my Benz (282K), but I am consistently humbled by not only other Benzes but older Corollas and Lexi, and just the rare well kept after car. I have a long way to go before the bragging can start! Just the other day someone stopped me in a parking lot and asked me how many miles I had on my car. I said 280K. He and his friend were getting into a last generation S class, an S430 I think. He says I've got 360K. I was like huh?

A friend of mine was at a Volvo gathering and found himself parked near that particular P1800. The owner started the engine as he talked to some of the spectators.
After a while, my friend approached him and said, "Irv, you've got to turn that thing off. That car stinks!"
