Depends on the question... in my case, no.

I don't think OP will need it either if he chooses his motor wisely.

As for an EMS, people with this motor like the Hydra. Not a whole lot of squirted 3sgtes running around.

There's a couple people running OBD1 chipped Honda ECUs, though.

Calica is right. There are not many MS run 3S out there. There is one on alltrac.net, with a really nice write up, and it would be nice to have more than enough ECU for future mods (never satisfied with "enough" power.)

Is it worth getting a 5SFE crank for a 2.2 stroker?

I don't disagree that the first two generations can't be improved upon, I just remember hearing nightmare stories from a local guy researching a third gen swap into his ST185. His information was that the ECU had sensors all over the car: wheel speed, steering angle, shocks. All sorts of wierd stuff, and it cross referenced signal inputs so if the rear shocks weren't compressing under acceleration or steering wasn't changing in a slide it would throw a hissy fit and a ton of codes on broken sensors. Why Toyota would have done this I don't know because it's not like Toyota had active stability management back in 1994, but then again I can't believe they cancelled the Alltrac just before Subaru blew the market wide open with the WRX ...

I might be off-base on the details and it was a while ago so the community may have created solutions for these issues, but I do know that back in the day there was serious concern about being able to use the stock third gen ECU in a swap.

sr20det, cheap and comes with a rwd tranny. also i am pretty sure it is lighter then a 3sgte, and it runs off the harness, just give it 12v

Yeah, it's all not a big deal now.

Neither is the "4th gen" motor out of the Caldina these days.

It's also not as strong and has a valvetrain design ill-suited for abuse.

Yeah, that's a different motor. I don't know much about that motor other than it's really uncommon.

It doesn't come out to quite a 2.2, and that's up to you.

I think it's overkill for your power goals, personally.
