Hrm. I was told I needed to up the ante when it was revealed that a v12 Miata existed, I suspect this fits the bill.

I'm trying to wrap my head around it. Are two pistons connected around a common crank pin? It seems too close to be parallel crankshafts. What's the deal.

That's my guess. Basically, two VR6s stuck together. Nekkid Bugatti engine? Look at the webbing at the bottom of the block. Pretty.

When you think about it, it's pretty amazing how technology has reached a point where something like that can be cast.

tis a bugatti engine and it's only got 4 camshafts. One per row of 4 cylinders. I know this is an exotic and rare motor, but to think it took 16 cylinders and four turbos to produce 1000bhp when you could have easily done that with a 2JZ + turbo(s), LSx + turbo(s), etc.

Sure. They chose this solution on purpose.

I asked them about the crank when I saw it. They said it looks just like a V8 crank with extra-long journals. I was disappointed they didn't have the crank on display though.

I guess they wanted a semblance of OE drive ability and reliability.

That looks like it would fit in a lot of places a V12 wouldn't.

Is a W8 the same configuration? That would make it shorter than quite a few 4-bangers. Evil gears are definitely turning...

This is poorly edited clip, but it shows the w16 being assembled. The crank is a particularly interesting piece.

Funny this guys truck makes just as much horsepower with a fraction of the moving parts! http://quadrasteerclub.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/773102732/m/6651036452

I was going to add 'and a fraction of the awesomness' but then I looked at your link and discoverd much awesomness!

Did it work out? The link ends in 2007 with the stated goal not yet achieved. Great sleeper for sure at whatever power it ended up at. That is a huge package in comparison with the w16, it would not begin fit in the bugs chassis. Apples and Oranges IMO.

Yep, a W8 is basically half the length of this motor. I imagine a VW guru will chime in as to why it's not a significantly more popular swap candidate.
