I wouldn't mind an LSx motor, either. I like my 400hp/400tq right out of the box in the Pontiac. I would love to drop that into the Crown Vic. And my P71 is already a PI car (2001). I'm not really bored with the power quite yet, once the T45 is all in-place, I think it'll be suspension next.
The thing is, by the time another motor is all purchased, adapted, and installed, I'm sure I could probably find a used 2v Vortech supercharger kit somewhere and just pop that on and hit my power goals.
i did a ton of thinking on the LSx swap the last week. i figure with stand alone engine management, the ford sending units installed to feed ford ecm, dakota digital vss signal changer to make the ecm think the 4.6 is still in the car should net working factory gauges, speedo, odo, and cruise control.
Again, you're OVERthinking. LSx motors have the harness and ECm all in the engine bay. PHR did a VERY good series on LS-Swaps last year (a LS1 into a fox Mustang). So NO computer, NO sensors, etc are needed if you get ahold of a complete setup (which in the case of truck 5.3 and 6.0's is easy, like I said starting at $1000 for complete engine/trans/wiring). For gauges the simplest thing to do is swap in a GM cluster, throttle's are cable driven so that's easy plus stock CV cruise should work. It's basically motor mounts, driveshaft, and the gauge swap. Everything else will be fine, including the gear shift.
And all of the 4.6 S/C's I see around (even used) start at $2000, so an LS is 1/2 the price for the same power and better mileage. Throw in a cam just to be fun 
Perhaps, but again, for my state's emissions they take the OBD2 info. What is the Ford computer going to say when they plug it in? It isn't connected to anything anymore. And not all of them are cable throttle, but the gas pedal seems real easy to install.

Oh, I know the LSx is a better motor than the DOHC modular; I'm just one of the Ford guys that's totally butt-hurt about it.
Frustrates the crap out of me that Chevy will make a badass motor, then put it in EVERYTHING, making them super-cheap as a swap. The Ford motor might actually be better, but because they're so stingy with their good motors, it costs four times as much to get, there's half as many parts available for it, so no one wants to deal with it, and it gets relegated to obscurity and legend for no good reason (can we say SOHC 427 FE, anyone?).
The OBDII under the hood will tell them the GM computer. It's all gravy.
here the vin they read has to match the car - ford car + gm computer = bad
Here there's no emissions and I could have a carb'd AMC engine in it and nobody would care.

thats no fun, they aren't as good as the lsx - even the new hemis. nowhere near the aftermarket.
as far as OVERthinking - i want something that looks, feels, and runs like it could have come out of the factory - hence my solution to keep the ford ecm in control of the factory cluster and steering wheel mounted cruise controls. i foresee programming the ford ecm to think it's running trouble free enough to throw no codes so the emissions nazis can plug into the stock data port and pass the car, and having a separate hidden port to read/program the ls1 computer.
pre OBD2 crossbreed swaps are easier IMHO because you just need to pass the sniffer - no reading of info off the ecm.
Speaking of looking/feeling/running like it could have come that way, just think how stock you could make a 5.4 sohc look with a 4.6intake manifold adapter.

i almost ebayed myself an all aluminum 4.6 dohc last night but resisted the urge to mess with what isn't broken

Now there, we luck out in Illinois. No tests on anything older than 1996. I guess sniffers were too expensive.
I was driving to work this morning and saw one of the "new" thunderbirds and thought that they shared the panther platform? If they depreciate enough, that might make for a sick track day/autox project.

Actually I think it is the Jag/LS platform. I cannot remember its name.
LS/Bird/baby Jag are all on the DEW98 platform. 4.6 intake will not work on the 5.4. 5.4 is just a tad wider, small enough to make you want to modify the 4.6, big enough to make it a pain!
Ah, bummer. Still if jag bits can be made to work. Perhaps an AWD version could be crafted? Hmm, if the lotto ever hits, this could become a fun project.
Dragging this up from the depths. What are the options for a 93 CV, way pre PI motors, I'm not even sure it's OBDII, could be OBDI, I know you guys will know. What are the potential SIMPLE and CHEAP swaps for this, assume keeping the stock trans. I was thinking just a much newer 4.6 from a something with a alloy block. Probably an Explorer as I think they had alloy blocks. Where is there an Idiots guid to Panther swaps?

I'm 99% of the way done putting a 5.4 into my 2002 P71.
Just need to hook up the egr pipe. put the accessory belt on. reinstall the wiperbox assembly. upload the tune. done.
Too bad it's 10 degrees with a record snowfall here right now.
