What about an Audi/VW longintudinal engine and transaxle out of a front wheel drive car? Or go wild and use a 2.7 v6 bi-turbo or 4.2 v8 with or without turbos

A Subie motor would provide plenty of room for an upper link!

I was servicing out the AE92 Rolla last night and it was next to the Europa. So I got the tape measure out. The widths are virtually identical. The Europa is about 5 inches shorter. A lot lower, of course.

A Rolla drive train won't fit in the Europa without hacking the frame rails. OA Width on the power plant was about 36 inches, harmonic balancer to back of the 5th gear housing extension. Inside frame rail to inside frame rail on the Europa was around 29 inches where the Y has opened up. Besides the frame rails in the way, it would fit. Interestingly enough, 29 inches just happens to be the width of a 1UZFE, header to header. Inside engine compartment side wall to wall was about 36 inches. Fore/aft distance was fine. All measurements approximate.

Fore/aft placement of a 4AG with the original trans and an adapter plate does fit. A guy on the list sells the pieces needed. I need the measurement of a 1zzfe from the harmonic balancer to the rear of the block. I bet it's about the same as a 4AG.
