    Hey guys,

Well this morning I ran across a guy at work that is in another department. We used to work together, and I know him pretty well. I saw him in the parking lot working under the dash of his truck, and asked him what he was up to, and if he needed any help. He told me he was just putting the factory stereo back in his truck as he was trading it in on a new car tomorrow.

I asked him what the dealer was giving him on this really good looking, but old truck, and he said $500. I told him heck I'll give you $500 for it just as a mostly a joke, and he agreed to it. I started looking it over a bit more, and remembering my old 96 I bought new. The truck is a 94 SLT club cab 2wd in green, and the body is really nice aside from some rust on the passengers side front fender behind the bumper, and a dent on the passengers side door from a deer that ran into it a few weeks back. The frame is really in great shape with only some surface rust that I could see,but nothing scaly,or worrisome.

It has 230kish miles on the 3.9 litre V6, but the engine bay is as clean as a whistle. He recently put a new fuel pump in it as well as a idle air control valve, and some other minor stuff. He says it doesn't always run so good, and he is using mid-grade fuel to help it run better. The truck is showing a Check Engine light, and I pulled the codes by switching the ignition off and on three times. I got the following code 1-2,and 5-2. I think they are for battery disconnected recently for the first, and engine running rich for the other if I did my research correctly. The battery one will reset itself from what I have gather so far,but what could be causing the other? He said it may be due to the new fuel pump, but that doesn't sound right to me. Any ideas?

I really don't have a need for the truck, but it seemed a good deal even to flip it with the buy-in being around scrap value for a truck that is probably 4000lbs. Oh yeah the radiator is leaking a little as well from the tank and core being a bit crusty, but that is an easy fix.

The miles are high, but the truck is clean, and well maintained by the seller who is the only owner. He has a spread sheet of all the work ever done to it,and I know the guy real well. Is it a smart buy even for no other reason than it seems a good deal. I will attach a link later with pics of it when I get home.

Any input would be much appreciated.

    Chris

With the mileage, damage door and rusty fender and electrical problems, it sounds like it's not worth a lot more than $500. I'm not sure it would be the best truck to flip since there are problems with many aspects of the truck.

    What year is Lesley's Dak?

Mine's a 97, completely different body style. It started out with the same engine... however I believe yours has a single throttle body injector and the tranny's hydraulic rather than electronically controlled. Engine's pretty much bullet-proof though, it's the same as the 5.2 (318) with 2 cylinders lopped off. Codes could be the 02 sensors. Throttle bodies on these puppies tend to get carboned up, cleaning them will help it run better.

Do you need to haul stuff? If so, its a great deal. If you have no use for it, you're putting money into something for nothing.

Yeah. If you could use it, go for it, otherwise, pass.

If you need to haul stuff around and you know the truck has been well maintained then I would go for it....

There's always room for a beater truck in everyone's driveway

I am sort of getting second thought about this though mainly because I have a beater truck already. Granted it doesn't see the light of day during the winter, but I suppose that is why I have my van anyway. It does seem like a sweet deal though even with the few ills the truck has.

what is it with Daks rusting in the front? the early ones rotted out the fenders.. the later ones rotted the front bumper?

If you don't need it, don't keep it.

But if you could use it as a winter beater then sell it next spring, I'd go that route.

    It's a Dak thing, you wouldn't understand.

Ive got a truck similar to that.. in way worse shape and with more miles and i wouldnt even THINK about selling it for $500. Because i love it.

code 52 is probably an oxygen sensor thing.

Its mpi, not tbi so there is no injector in the throttle body.

I dont know what the market is up there but you could sell that thing for about 3 times that much where im at.

Yes I believe it is a Magnum engine with Multi-port Injection rather than the TBi I had on both my 3.9 equipped 88 D150, and my 89 Dakota 4wd. The seller said he noticed a leak in the cross over hose on the fuel rail, but put a hose clamp on it to stop it. Maybe that is part of the problem with it not always running great. How can I find out for sure what the code 52 is referring to?

The '94 is a Maggie motor. They started in '92. I don't have any of my service manuals handy here but if I remember correctly a 52 should mean rich fuel mixture. Maybe a vacuum leak, maybe an O2 sensor, etc.

If there's a leak in the fuel rail check the vacuum lines around there too. Does it look like something rubbed through the fuel hose or just age?

i know they hold together, but those 3.9's have got to be one of the top 10 least inspiring sounding engines i've ever heard.
