Does anyone know if the 95, escort wagon came with the 1.8 or 1.9 ltr engine? It's got a 5spd tranny if that matters. I found one for $600 not too far from me. Thanks Dan

All wagons have the 1.9.

Well from 91 to 96 they do. After that they got the 2.0 like all the rest of the escorts.

Was the 1.9 a sohc motor?

Yep. Sure was.
I suggest you rip it out and replace with a 2.5 litre Mazda V6.

There are people getting, IMO, pretty ridiculous power out of the 1.9 too.

for some reason I think that if you turn a dsm turbo manifold upside down it fits on the 1.9, but I have no idea where I heard that

Probably FEOA.net. That's what they all use.
But what Carson said is correct. You can get STUPID power out of the 1.9. You can get nice power for very cheap, or insane stupid power for not so cheap. I'm pretty sure, though, that there's one guy on the FEOA site that's making 225whp/300wtq on a 1.9T setup that he put together for like $400.
Now, whether or not your transmission will hold up is an entirely different issue.
If you really want to get crazy, wrap your brain around THIS:

This is just.... wrong.

Zetec+CVH=ZVH Zetec block with CVH head. I think they do this on the other side of the pond to get up to the 2.0 liter...er...litre mark. It might not make sense here in the states with the 2.0 SPI, but its out there.

I believe they also do the 1.9spi with the 1.9H.O. head for hilariously low compression, which of course = MOAR BOOSTZ

I've heard the 1.9 is prone to fail in the head or something. Can someone confirm?

When they get hot they can crack. I had one like that. I got a reconditioned (or whatever...) head off ebay from some guy in the southeast for like $125 shipped.
Heads and timing belts aren't too hard on those cars.

Is there another mazda or ford head that u can swap on that won't crack ?

You could swap the entire zetec engine in there...

I don't know but if you don't overheat the car, you won't have any problems. I think this is pretty typical of aluminum head on Iron block engines. Poor seal at the headgasket causes overheating causes warping and/or cracking.
Cooling system maintenance is your friend (Like on any 10+ year old car).

Before The Boy's '95 Tracer (same as the 'scort) got smashed by Grampa, we were going to do some boneyard frankenstein work on it, following some of the info on feoa.net.

They don't all crack. Mine went 280k before the rest of the car cracked around a boulder.

Glad it's a 5-speed. Those automatics are made of glass. I went through 2 on my 95 Tracer. Wish I knew about that turbo trick when I had mine. Then again, that would've just fragged the fragile tranny sooner...!
