Well, my wife might not let me do anything to it, but um...can I do anything to it? I don't know anything about it, other than it's slow and has a five-speed.

If it's slow it must be a 1.5 (all of 92 hp) DX or LX. You are right, there's not much that can be done to that engine short of a swap. That said, the ES has a bit more horsepower (122) but around town it may not feel all that much faster. At least you have the manual transmission, as the auto really saps the pep from either engine and it's known as being "less than bulletproof". Again, not much aftermarket support for the engine, but it's similarity to the Miata engine means it can PROBABLY use a few parts from that car (I don't know Mazdas well enough to say this with ANY certainty). Supposedly, this car, and it's later models have decent chassis dynamics (a good ride/handling balance).

Well, figure I'll go find a good Protege board... Gotta be something for basically free I could do to it that'd be enjoyable. It is the 1.5, you're correct. Thanks for the reply!

Club Protege has some good content sometimes. I did some reading over there when I was putting my '94 together.
