I'm looking to build a locost of sorts. I remember reading on this forum some very good things about the rear axle from an alfa spider (strength and lsd). I can't find the thread. I was wondering if anyone has dimensions of the width and also the size of the diff housing. The weight would be good to know too. Also, any idea where to find one? There certainly aren't any alfas in the wreckers near me.

If you can't find one locally, try Alfa Parts Exchange. i bought a diff from them about twelve years ago to replace a loose, howling differential on a project Alfa. The one they sent me was a good, limited-slip, 4.55 unit, and the price including shipping was very reasonable (though not pick-a-part junkyard cheap).

About where are you?
APE is quite good, but they are located in California. With some careful looking, you may be able to find a parts car on craigslist or even alfabb.com
Rear ends are not going to be an issue, if you find a large pile of rust.
Not sure if I'll have the time to measure the one I have, but they are compact housings, and fairly narrow tracks.

I used a gtv2000 rear axle in a rx3 race car. It was the correct width, 4.1 lsd, 11" rear discs, worm drive, aluminum housing with sheet metal axle housings (can you say negative camber)
Go with the 2000 due to the larger bearings and axles over the 1750

Thanks for the tips. I wasn't able to message the guy on locost forums, but I'll post in his thread and see if he responds. I'm in Canada, so they aren't easy to find, but I do have a mailbox setup in buffalo for shipping item to. If anyone comes across one, I'd love to hear about it.
