OK, normally, I really don't have much to say about the rental cars that cross my path. However, in a 4 hour mad dash from Heidelberg to Maasterich, through a "follow the 100 mph taillights in front of you kind of snowstorm" drive, this thing really acquitted itself.

Maybe I just like it because I am celebrating the fact I did not die, but it also has me sold on something I never would have considered: Diesel fuel. This thing hauls right along and does not impede traffic in the fast lane of the Autobahn like most of the crap I rent.

The six speed tranny? Meh...still not liking those so much. Not like this thing needs more torque. Maybe I am just lazy

For the folks in the US, the Laguna platform-shares with the Nissan Altima/Murano.

I googled it and came up with this: The hood ornament is certainly interesting!

I don't know how good of a reputation Renault has but based on the styling they are doing something right. I wouldn't mind seeing these sold as nissans, compared to say a versa.

I have a friend that recently acquired a gray market Laguna wagon. Kind of typical for him though, he loves orphan cars and has 2 Yugo's he got for little more than hauling them away.

The British mag CAR really likes all the new Renaults but prefers the smaller models. The styling on the new coupe...well, from pix I've seen, it's typical Renault: that is, perhaps WAAAY too far out in front on the styling curve. It's definitely a love or hate kind of car, and supposedly the depreciation curve is so steep that no one buys them new...which feeds into the rep that Renault has as "not a master of the big car market".

    CAR's assessment?

"A bland Renault with little to shout about, and a black mark on golden boss Ghosn's CV."

Of the 13 Renault models profiled in CAR's GBU section, only the Twingo and Megane get "UGLY" ratings...all others are better.

Go to the official website at www.Renault.co.uk to find pix and details
