(yes, I am selling the project to the wife on the mileage aspect, and so far, she's buying it).

You realize the Flyin Miata V8 is getting ~35 mpg, right? Tough to beat that, regardless of cylinder count.

May be what you are looking for. Compact 60 degree v6 at 59 pounds/block weight and a set of aluminum heads from a FWD 3.4 should see you on the way.

Or the 6 in the Mustang the last few years, also good for 300 hp or so.

oh also for the record there are 350z trans you can get off dealers that were replaced because they pop out of 6th gear (wouldn't be using 6th on a race car anyway) for a couple hundred bucks, and you can buy 95-99 maxima ENTIRE CARS for $500 with salvage titles but the engine runs fine.

so me thinks if that actually bolts up that would be a good solution. but youre still gonna have to figure out the flywheel, starter, clutch, and wriing situation. good luck getting a speedo to work. etc.

What are those 2.8 60 degree V6's capable of? Werent they like 100-130hp stock? lol.

I'd like to see someone put a 4.3 crank/cam in a cut/welded/sleeved Ls1. Would be a ton of work to save maybe 40 pounds.

Here's an interesting article on 4.3 performance:
