Thinking of an e28 (m30 & 5 spd) for challenge fodder. What should I look out for/avoid?

Don't know about that one, but if it were me I'd take it to Fred Brown in Waukegan and get his opinion. Good BMW guy that doesn't try to find things that "need" fixing.

Check out the tech section of http://www.mye28.com/

And also the classifieds. Here's a nice looking example for $900. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/1623997276.html

As Jefmed2 said, they're solid cars. And the M30 is a stout engine, so don't be deterred by high mileage, or a dash full of warning lights.

Nearly bulletproof. Handle surprisingly well with firmer struts. Don't expect to make big power out of the M30 without boost (which is surprisingly easy with US-spec compression).
