I brought this engine home today to use some of the internal pieces for a special old speed 36hp Volkswagen engine I am building for my dad to run in his 1960 Beetle. This engine will be used in the 36hp vw unlimited class at maxton. So does anybody know what the engine in the pictures is?

Did you pull it from a chassis, or just take it from somebody's yard? It's been a looooooooong time since I've fooled around with aircooled, but the shot from the top makes me wonder if you've got a Type 3 or 4.

It is dirty from sitting in the engine barn at the Volkswagen farm since the 70's. It is not type 3 or 4. Think non vw.

Is it out of a 912?

I guess a 36hp VW motor would be too obvious?

    If it's not a VW, then I would guess a 356 motor?

It's a three piece Porsche block, either a later 356 or a first series 912. If the castings are OK it's worth some shekels, more so if the crank is OK. Good score!

Well I had no idea what it was (before reading the above post) but I really want to see this legendary volkswagen farm.

Just looked at this again -- It's either a 356 C or more likely a 912, as it doesn't have a mechanical tach drive on the oil pump.

It is a 356 motor. The crank is a direct fit into a 36hp case and when you use the crank, rods, cam, 36hp cylinders with 2mm shims and miata pistons gets you about 1300cc from a 36 hp block. I am also going to used the oil cooler and oil filter on the 36hp. I am building an engine for the sss class where you can do anything to the engine but you must have 36hp heads and carb but you can modify them as much as you want.

so what you're saying is that the 36 hp class cars actually make a lot more than 36 horsepower?

  • ratghia

Yes. There is a new age turbo class that is making crazy (for Volkswagen) hp. I am aiming for about 50hp at the wheels and hope that i can break the class record of 81.223mph. The turbo classes are running around 104mph when a stock 36hp will do about 65. The dss classes and up allow the use of any part as long as you have a 36hp case. A lot of people use a 36hp case and then build a 356 engine out of it.

Are you allowed any aero mods in the class? An old bug is a real brick with that massive frontal area.

You need to have a beetle body with no mods metal fenders and a full interior.

Full interoir, I did'nt even do that for my dd. the back seat in that car was the most use less thing I could find about that car. Unless I really wanted to be mean to the thid person that would tag along. I've been married for ten years now,. The back seat is a bit too small unless you really need to somethin done.
