    Hi

I have seen a few of these on You Tube ,

has anyone used one ? has anyone built one ?

We are having a car show over in Europe and it would be Great to show up with one of these and see what HP the braggers really have

any ideas ? maybe an old smog dyno ?

Not sure about building one, but I occasionally see 2WD dynapacks for sale. They're pretty portable and relatively affordable (20k to 55k USD is what I've seen around here)..

Local portable dynoYou're not going to build one worth a shucks without some money. There is one that regularly comes to shows here, and judging by the steady line of customers, I'd say they make good money. $60 for two runs as I recall.

You can make them easily enough but they will not be as good (repeatable) as a factory unit. Water brakes dynos are some of the easiest to home brew. You need a centrifugal (sp?) water pump and a set of bearings for the pump housing to rotate on. Bolt a torque arm off the housing and add a pressure gauge on the end of the arm, drive pump shaft with a drum the wheel sits on.

It's always fun to see one show up at events.. and see how many drivers find excuses Not to use it!

I've used one, at Hyperfest way back in 2002 or 2003. It was fun seeing how little power my little hyundai put out.

I was thinking of using an older floor mount rolling dyno that you can get for close to scrap value,

Here in California the smog check shops use them , but are always being forced into upgrading,

The problem will be converting the computer to Horsepower , but I have been told thats its mostly software,

    anyway its just an idea

Make sure the emissions dynos you're looking at can handle high horsepower and high speeds. A lot of them are glorified hamster wheels and can't handle speeds above 70mph or high torques. They're designed to simulate normal driving around town, which really doesn't require a lot of power or high speeds.

I used to have one, and built it into a trailer- My Dyno at the Mitty

    • but expect to pay at least $20k for the dyno and another $10k for the trailer...
