1990 Quattro Coupe. I asked for pictures and got a quick response. Car looks like it's in not-terrible shape -- 17" wheels a bit pimp for me, but looks slightly lowered, nice color combo, and a 5-speed quattro coupe like I was just about looking for.

    The problems?

Ad says "piston blew." One of the 3 pics shows the rear of the car, with a "turbo" badge off a recent VW stuck on the decklid.

    Berkeley.

So; anyone have a spare 20v sitting around? Or, well, other bad ideas to share?

    Matt

    Rats.

Got more pictures -- not a coupe; a 90 sedan.

Not terrible; but not as exciting.

Sorry to get you all excited (I was, too) M

I'd talk him down to $500 and still take it if it looks clean otherwise. The 90 was a very good looking car, and they drive pretty nicely.

Which takes me back to one of the original questions... anybody got a 20v motor laying around?

Other bad-idea used audi: a 1990 V8 for $750. "Needs left ball joint."

Or put them together for one super-bad idea. V8 90?

Noooooo; I'm looking for a DD, not a years-long project. No matter how fun it sounds.

V8 90 has been done a few times. And yes. It is awesome. Especially when then motivated by boost on top of that.

If the V8 really only needs a ball joint and doesn't appear to be a mahoosive headache otherwise (parts availability on these is pretty crap), snap it up.

"Mahoosive headache"? As in "rewire from scratch" headache? Audis of that era left the showroom with one tailight dim and the amber on the opposite side permanently lit.

    Cool though they be.

    "Mahoosive headache"?

    Likely.

Though it would be replacing a VW of similar era, and joining Yugo, MG, and Fiat in my stable. What do you mean -- are there cars that don't have electrical gremlins?

Probably can't see it this weekend, but might on Monday.

Talk you out of it? You'd have better luck holding your AA meeting in a bar.

I used to have both a Coupe Quattro 20v and a 200 turbo 10v. If you're going to be playing with motor swaps, the MC (late 10v turbo) is going to be the best bang for your buck - and a lot more unkillable than any 20v motor. The 7A (N/A 20v) sounds wonderful but is kind of a dog, not very well suited to a heavy AWD car. 3B/AAN/etc (20v turbo) sound godly and make a lot of power, but "expensive" is a bit of an understatement (ever paid $2500 for an engine? you're about to).

The 90q was lighter than the CQ.
